Deuteronomy 10:12-19, v 17-19

Deuteronomy 10:12-19, v 17-19

It’s crazy how we as humans tend to treat people different based on whether or not we think
they belong. Insiders get the attention, admiration, and care, while outsiders get the cold
shoulder. God being God, knows this tendency about us.
He knew that even His own people, who themselves had been shown great favor and honor when they were once outsiders, still fell prey to this broken view of others. That’s why He gives them this reminder in Deuteronomy 10 of how they are to live as His people.

“ 14 Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.  15  Yet the LORD set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.  16  Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn. 17  For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.  18  He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.  19  Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.”

Deuteronomy 10:14-19

God tells them, “LOVE the outsider.” Though they may look different, talk different, dress
different, believe different, vote different, live different show them love. Show them the same
value and care that I showed you when YOU were an outsider.
Remember, it’s because of MY great love that I have shown favor to you. It’s nothing you have done. It’s what I have done for you.

So LOVE the outsider.

Show them care and value, even if you don’t think they deserve it. Love the outsider so they may not only feel like an insider, but may become an insider.
One who knows they belong in the family of God, not because they deserve it, but because Jesus’ death and resurrection declare it.
