Have you ever thought about the power of salt? Probably not, but it is powerful stuff. It’s a simple and common substance found throughout the world. Yet, its amazing influence has led it to be one of the most utilized and impactful natural substances. Think about the last time you said “This salt tastes potatoey.” I would guess the answer is never. That’s because it’s the other way around. You always say these potatoes, this soup, this steak…is salty. That’s influence. Salt impacts everything it touches. I believe that’s one of main reasons Jesus uses salt to describe His followers in His Sermon on the Mount.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”MATTHEW 5:13-16
Both salt and light influence the things with which they come in contact. And followers of Jesus, beloved children of God, are meant to do the same. In fact, it’s what you and I were created and redeemed for; to be influencers who give life through our words and actions like the God who gave His life for us. We choose to serve rather than be served; to show value to each person no matter who they are or whether we agree with them. I have a friend whose goal is to make each person’s day 1% better by his interaction with them, to be a life-giving influencer to the Glory of God. This week live out your God given purpose of being a life-giving influencer, sharing the love of Jesus in every interaction. Who knows what God will do with it. Take some time to reflect on this passage through these questions: Look at verse 15. What is so ridiculous about someone lighting a lamp and then putting it under a basket? How does this relate to you and your life? What are some practical ways you could give life to others in your interactions with them this week?
