Romans 5:8

Romans 5:8

Who would you die for? It’s kind of an odd question. It’s not one we usually think of, but it is an interesting question to think about.

I would like to say that I would die for my wife and my kids, other family members, and my close friends. On a good day, maybe I would even die for a stranger in peril. But what about somebody who had wronged me? What about somebody who had done horrible atrocities to others, who had caused unthinkable pain and suffering? What about someone who had hurt me or someone I cared about? Would I give my life for them?

Honestly my first inclination is “No. Why would I give my life for them? That’s ridiculous.” And that’s what makes the truth declared in today’s scripture so beautiful and yet so scandalous.

In Romans chapter 5 Paul writes:

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8

This is the amazing, beautiful, scandalous love of God revealed in Jesus. It’s the heart of the good news about Jesus.

God gave His life for those who did not deserve it; wrong-doers, enemies, ungodly people like you and me. People who had opposed Him and gave Him the cold shoulder. People who caused suffering and pain through their words and actions. What a beautiful love this is.

This is God’s amazing love for YOU. Though He knew you would be far from perfect, He knew the wrong you would do and hurt you would cause, He still gave His life for you so that you might have forgiveness and new life.

This is Good News

It’s beautiful when we truly grasp it. But the hard part is admitting that we ARE sinners, ungodly enemies of God. You and I are imperfect and broken. You are not good enough on our own. You need a Savior.

Thank God, that in His great love, He has provided one in Jesus. Today, rest in the reality of the amazing love of God.

As you consider this scripture and reflect this week, respond to the following questions:

1.  Read Romans 5 verses 6 through 11. What stands out to you in these verses?

2. How does knowing that Jesus died for you when you didn’t deserve it impact how you think and live each day?
