It is okay to be where you are. God is there too.

Today, I am not full of words. Today, I just want to remind you that progress in our life of faith is not a straight line – that it is okay to be where you are. God is there too. I find great comfort in knowing I can sit in His presence and simply be. I do not always have to be full of words or full of actions or full of thoughts and great new ideas. His presence is enough.

In recent days, I have found an unusual sanctuary by letting go of the need to pray in the ordinary sense (filled with my thoughts and my words and my requests) and simply to remember He is with me – but then to do more than just remember, to allow myself to experience His presence. I picture Him with me, but it is not the same as picturing a friend with me because when I picture the friend, she is not truly there. When I remember and imagine God with me, it is not just my imagination; He is actually there. Not only is He actually there, but He invites me simply to be with Him – no agenda, no perfectly crafted prayer. This is no awkward silence – this is a renewing silence. This is rest.

We do not need to come always to God with words. Sometimes, it is better without them.

I recently read a devotional by Dallas Willard on the topic of Solitude. As parents, solitude is not always easy to find, but it is my hope today that this short post and this devotional by Dallas Willard will inspire you to seek a little solitude in your life, even if it may not be as much or as often as you may like. Perhaps it is the drive home from work. Perhaps it is a quiet half hour in the middle of the night. Perhaps it is the hour once a week you arrange to sneak away and be alone. Perhaps it is another time which works for you. If you struggle to find solitude, spend some time in prayer asking God for the gift of some silence and solitude then watch to see how He might respond.

May you find rest, and may you find God Himself as you enter into silence and solitude today.

God bless your home,

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah
